General:
Perennial herb from a stout taproot and branching stem-base; stems several, tufted, from ascending-erect to decumbent, 10-30 cm tall/long, with fine, straight, appressed, unbranched hairs.
Leaves:
Alternate, pinnately compound, 3-8 cm long, short-stalked; leaflets 11 to 23, oblong-elliptic to narrowly egg-shaped, 5-17 mm long, appressed-hairy; stipules 1-3 mm long, joined nearly half their length into a papery sheath.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a loose, axillary raceme of 3 to 13 pea-like flowers, racemes 2-8 cm long on stalks much longer than the leaves; corollas bluish- or pink-purple, 7-11 mm long, the wings considerably longer than the banner and slightly longer than the keel; calyces black appressed-hairy, 4.5-6.5 mm long, the linear-lanceolate teeth 1/2 the length of the tube.
Fruits:
Pods, oblong-elliptic, drooping from stalks shorter than the calyx-teeth, black appressed-hairy, membranous, compressed, not inflated, 12-16 mm long, not grooved below or partitioned, 1-chambered.
